What is a IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is conducted by three institutions, namely, the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment (University of Cambridge).

IELTS format

There are two variants of the test – Academic or General Training and IELTS test takers can choose between them depending on their academic or professional aims, or visa requirements. Speaking and listening components remain the same for all the candidates but Reading and Writing components differ.

IELTS Academic Training: The IELTS Academic test is appropriate for entry to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, and also for professional registration purposes. It assesses whether you are ready to begin studying or training in an environment where the English language is used and reflects some of the features of language used in the academic study.

IELTS General Training: This IELTS test is suitable for those wishing to study abroad or migrate to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK.

Duration of IELTS Test

The total IELTS test duration is around 2 hours and 40 minutes for the Listening, Reading, and Writing modules.

Reading: 1 hour (60 minutes)

Writing: 1 hour (60 minutes)

Listening: 40 minutes, 30 minutes for which a recording is played centrally and an additional 10 minutes for transferring answers onto the OMR answer sheet

Speaking: 11–14 minutes

IELTS Eligibility Criteria

IELTS exam does not have any less or minimum eligibility criteria. Any individual who’s willing to pursue studies or work abroad can give apply for this test.
